The World Health Organization, who’s initials are WHO and I find that very apropos, plans to publish research on how scientists mutated the avian flu virus into a highly contagious form.
Why in the blue hell would they do that? Who are the idiots making this decision? Does it make a lick o’ fucking sense?
OF COURSE NOT. I think it’s shit like this that makes me question the common sense abilities of people with power.
Jon Stewart explains, in a manner that makes one giggle at least, why it makes no sense, as if we really need to have this explained to us.

I’m not defending what they did, but I imagine one would do that to determine how the virus could mutate outside the lab, to determine what genetic changes are entailed in the mutation, and what anti-virals could be cooked up to combat it.
Actually this is a good example of completely over-hyped news caused not by scientists, but by politicians and so-called security experts. The scientists demonstrated the changes necessary to make avian flu cross over and be more infective of humans. This is useful research as it allows health experts to track bird flu in the wild and keep track of potentially dangerous changes that they can now identify. Also as B4 said, it allows scientists to work on cures before it crosses over in the wild. The news report of this potentially killing millions of people is scaremongering of the worst kind. The terrorist angle is absurd. No country has effectively made bioweapons and the thought of some dude splicing genes in his basement instead of strapping bombs to his chest is a joke. The reason the WHO is releasing the info is because they correctly decided that the “security experts” were being ridiculous and it was more important to actually disseminate the info.
I don’t know if you saw the original controversy (it was big among scientists but I don’t know how much made it to the MSM) but when the results were first submitted for publication Homeland Security blocked publication of the actual details and they could be obtained only after specifically requesting them and receiving approval to do so. WHO decided that was stupid, and is going to release the info.
I see your point Fish, and B4′s as well, but there are countries that have attempted to make bioweapons in the past. And it was scientists that mutated this virus in the first place, which was sort of my point and I took it to be Stewarts point as well.
Why would scientists mutate a virus in the first place… Since in the wild, virus’s never cross over from one species to another it seems felony dumb to have done it to begin with.
